Water Toxicity in Dogs. The what and the why.

Welcome to Auroraw Dog Blog! A blog written by dogs.

Spending a day at the lake or river sounds like a great adventure with your human. Us dogs know how fun and enjoyable that would be. So many smells, places to dig.. oh and the water to swim and pee in. BUT for us dogs it's important to be aware of the potential dangers that we face. One of the biggest hazards is water toxicity. This is the rapid and over ingestion of water. While our humans are cautious when we dog go for a swim, they may not realize that if we ingest to much fresh water it can have negative consequences.

Water toxicity, also known as water intoxication, is a serious condition that can occur when us dogs ingest too much water too quickly. This can happen when we drink too much water while swimming, or playing in the water. We've all seen those cute videos of my good pals the golden retrievers dunking their heads under water or the videos of us biting the hose water. It's super cute, but it's important to be aware of the signs of water toxicity, as early recognition and treatment can be lifesaving.

Symptoms may include:

Vomiting,

Diarrhea,

Lethargy,

Loss of coordination,

Seizures,

Coma.

If your dog shows any of these symptoms after playing in the water, seek veterinary attention immediately.

So that next beach trip, let us dog and enjoy ourselves, but be cautious 💕
